Air turbulence in labs forces rethinking of exhaust options for fume hoods.

Lots of concerns accompany the proper selection of exhaust options for laboratory fume hoods. Ducted or ductless is just the beginning of process. Air turbulence, noxious fumes, hazardous vapors, dust, risk of explosion, spill containment can threaten personnel, the lab, and the experiment at hand. Will the lab need a constant air volume (CV) or a variable air volume (VAV) as an exhaust assist? Will the building need to be air balanced?

The UCSB Chemical Fume Hood Guide, for instance, suggests “new exhaust fans should be oriented in a straight up-blast orientation–not horizontally, nor with any turns in the ductwork before exhausting upward.” Victor Cardona and Steve Hackman’s , “Lab Basics: Optimizing Casework and Fume Hood Selection,” serves as a  good first step mini-course from a couple of top industry experts.

The polyethylene surface is chemically resistant and easy to clean. The windows wipe clean with a damp cloth while the front hood opens to three adjustable positions for air flow control. The exhaust duct is stepped for use with either a 4" or 6" pipe. An exhaust system capable of drawing 200 cfm (free air) is recommended. Overall dimensions are 27" x 13" x 22".
